Hello Tatiana!
I am preparing to the immigration to Canada. I have already failed one IELTS test and taken another. Nevertheless, I am going to continue learning English.
I have many different programs such as BX Language acquisition, English Grammar in Use, EEARWIN and some others. I have read some thoughts from Raymond Murphy, Lynn Visson, Zamyatkin, A. Wierzbicka. And of course I am using ABBY Lingvo.
During the process I have been encountering with the three phenomenons:
1) Everyone has a photographic memory. Some don't have film. (I mean I don't have)
2) I have no time to do all this useful exercises and read all this clever books.
(I can't complain, but sometimes I still do:))
3) I am interesting what does English informant feel when s/he uses this strange language constructions.

As an Eastern Slav I couldn't believe that: Disorder increases with time because we measure time in the direction in which disorder increases.(I mean that all depend on our will:))

Hi Андрiй,

Great story! :-) It’s a pleasure to talk to an original thinker like you, I know there are always some to be found among Eastern Slavs ;-)

I loved your style and the humour but I think you need to work on your grammar to improve your English, I did find a few mistakes in your writing. Corrections:

I am preparing for immigration to Canada.

During the process I have encountered three phenomena.

I have no time to do all these useful exercises and read all these clever books.

I am curious, what does an English informant feel when s/he uses these strange language constructions?

I mean that all depends on our will.

Hello Tatiana!
I'm not going to immigrate to Canada or to the other places :)
I have other goals. I want learn English because I want to begin my own business or maybe work together with people from other countries.
While I am studying in the university, I can devote more time for learning English. But I live in Ukraine and it is hard to have a practice in English here.
I don't want to enroll to any special courses or to a tutor. I think I can study by himself. Maybe I will change my mind later.
I began watching TV shows and movies in English (with subtitles) for expanding a vocabulary. And now I am trying to find friends in the social networks like ITalki and others for learning foreign languages together. Also I am going to improve my grammar with some interactive courses (on DVD or online).
Can you advice me something? Maybe some tips in self-organization. Also I'm interested in methods of expanding a vocabulary. What can I try in this field?

Oh, I accidentally wrote "I think I can study by himself.". Of course it should be "by myself" or "on my own".

Hi S.Effector,

Thank you for your message. I think your English is not at all bad already and I am sure you will be perfectly able to continue studying it by yourself as you seem to be pretty smart to me, but if one day you decide that you need professional help, don’t hesitate to contact me.

I have picked up a few sentences in your writing and made my corrections:

I want to learn English because I want to start my own business . . .
While I am studying at university, I can devote more time to learning English.
But I live in Ukraine and it is hard to practice English here.
I don't want to enrol on any particular courses or with a tutor.
Can you advise me about something?
Also I'm interested in methods of expanding my vocabulary.

Methods of expanding your vocabulary? Plenty of those. First things that come to mind:

1. Read simple texts, short stories and books, picking up words and expressions from them. Write all the new words down and learn them, trying to memorise them in context (учите слова не изолированно, а в контексте – пытайтесь запомнить не просто отдельное слово, а фразу/предложение целиком).

Have a look at the list of colloquial words and expressions I am giving here on this blog (см. раздел ‘Список разговорных слов и выражений’).

2. Listen to the radio/podcasts/audio books.

3. Find friends among native speakers or advanced learners to talk on Skype or write/email to and pick up new words from them. Make sure, though, that people from whom you are trying to learn English are knowledgeable and have a good command of the language, otherwise you may end up learning somebody else’s mistakes.

If you are interested in correspondence, you can look for pen friends/e-pals at various e- pal sites like this: http://www.e-palworld.co.uk/cgi-bin/code.cgi Write as much as possible about yourself when placing an advert there in order to attract more people. Describe yourself, your interests, likings, etc. and make sure your text is interesting and grammatically correct.
